Tuning for Chick Corea and Béla Fleck

I had the great honor and pleasure of preparing and tuning the piano for the start of Chick Corea and Béla Fleck’s second tour, at the Santa Fe Opera on Friday. It was a long twelve-hour day, but the sheer delight they had playing together, and their incredible artistry, made it worthwhile. I had great advice from his piano tech in California, and PianoWerkes did all the voicing and regulating at the store before it was moved.

We couldn’t keep the piano backstage because of the elaborate mic setup (including soundboard contact mics), but with careful padding and frequent touchups, it survived all the weather changes. And Béla was kind enough to let me tune the piano wherever it was most stable, and then he matched the banjo to it.
